God, ABBA, and a Really Hot Day

Does your mind ever wander to strange, unchartered places when you are overtaxed, overburdened and just plain cranky? Well, I went on quite a trek of warped logic this week. Even for me, this one was a beauty of free association thinking!

While returning from another trek to Walmart (why do the strangest things happen to me when I go to that place?) I saw a sign in front of a fundamentalist Christian Church that read:

"God is
Abba - Father"
Okay, I've since discovered this is a biblical term, but at the time, the Swedish Pop Music group of the '70's sprang to mind. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what one had to do with the other.

Now, stick close, here is where it begins to get wierd. My mind suddenly became flooded with ABBA memories. I was in Jr High, at a dance, and yes, I moved with glee to "Dancing Queen". I had my cowl neck sweater, my Levi's cords, and clogs. Seventh grade, and already, I was 32 flavors and then some! Anyway, I remembered the feeling I had that night, during that song. I was having a great time with my friends; one girl put way too much hairspray on her Farrah Fawcett hairdo-to the point it crunched upon contact (highly amusing to us at the time), I was caught smoking a cigarette behind the Church by a policeman and thought that was just the funniest thing. I remember a feeling of absolute happiness. For that moment in time, although I didn't realize what possibilities were available to me, I was open to them. I was thoroughly involved in the moment, enjoying where I was, who I was, and what I was. Despite the 70's attire, it was just a moment of joy.

Strangely enough, isn't that what communing with God is about, regardless of religion - finding joy in the moment with what you are.

Well, on a hot summer afternoon, with no rain in site, no Crazy Daisy sprinkler in stock at Wal-Mart, two overheated, overstimulated boys in the back of a station wagon with no A/C, the connection between a Swedish Pop band from the 70s and the Creator was made. It was about as far removed from the intended connotation as possible, but it was fun.

all the best,

Catie
