Plantation, Florida: January 1997 - 3 month old Jeremy Fiedelholz dies after 2
hours in his licensed day care due to suffocation. The provider was found to
be in heinous violation of "established" county regulations, and basic infant
care guidelines were not followed.
Guthrie, Oklahoma: November 1996 - 2 year old Michael Robinson III, died after
being struck by an automobile outside of his "Licensed Day Care Center". This
establishment had over 415 complaints against it including, according to
Oklahoma's Department of Human Services, children routinely left unattended,
unsafe playground equipment and at least one instance of an employee with a
criminal record of child abuse.
Pasadena, Maryland: 1995 - 2 year old Jordan Ambrozewicz drowned in an
ornamental pond at his day care center. 3 adults were on the premises and
Jordan was the only child at the facility at that time.
Peters, Pennsylvania: August 1995 - 4 year old Alexandra LeVasseaur died after
being left in a sweltering van for nearly 3 hours. The day care operator had
unloaded the van during a field trip and left the girl sleeping in the front
seat.
Windsor, Connecticut: February 1997 - 2 year old Raegan McBride died.
According to the state medical examiner, the cause of her death was a single
blow to the back of the head. The blow was allegedly delivered by the child's
day care provider Kathy Greene, who has been charged with manslaughter in the
case. After the death an investigator's probe found multiple complaints of
child abuse logged over 14 years against Ms. Greene. 20 charges were found
between her period of providing Foster care and Day care. By Connecticut law
licensing for both is prohibited.
San Diego, California: August 1997 - 6 month old Jasmine Miller died of blunt
force trauma to the head while in the care of Suzanne Johnson, licenced day
care operator, that was described by the Deputy Medical Examiner, Terri
Haddix, as equal to a fall from a third or fourth story window.
Littleton, Colorado: November 1998 - A Littleton day-care worker was arrested
for allegedly breaking the leg of a 2-year-old girl who was misbehaving.
Police say Sonya Rena Smith, 23, sat the little girl down and forcibly
crossed her legs when the child didn't follow instructions to sit down for
"movie time." The incident occurred the afternoon of Nov. 6 at Tutor Time
daycare center, 151 W. Mineral Ave.
Seattle, Washington: June 1998 - Charlotte, was pronounced dead at Children's
Hospital & Regional Medical Center last Wednesday after the owner of a
licensed home day-care center in Monroe called 911 earlier in the day to
report the child wasn't breathing. Charlotte was taken to Valley General
Hospital in Monroe then airlifted to Children's. Her injuries included
extensive bruising, cuts to her lip and mouth and internal bleeding. The King
County Medical Examiner's Office determined she died from a heavy blow to the
abdomen. The owner of the day-care operation, a 33-year-old Monroe woman, was
arrested yesterday on investigation of homicide-by-abuse.
Lyndhurst, Ohio: February 1998 - Detectives were preparing to present
evidence to a county prosecutor in the case involving 5-month-old infant
Madelyne Claire Hall who died last month at the home of her day-care
provider. At 2:37 p.m. Feb. 23, police received a 911 call from Croyden Road
resident Donna Stohlmann, who summoned officers to her home to respond to an
infant who was not breathing. The baby, Madelyne Claire Hall, was transported
to Meridia Hillcrest Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time
later.
South Carolina: Spring 1997 - A TLC child care worker was arrested and
charged with 33 counts of abuse following the 911 call and near fatal injury
of an infant in her care. Hours of repeated acts of violence against the
children in her care were found on video tape.
Mammoth, California: December 1997 - 2 1/2 year old Jessica Eggen dies from
crush injuries when 700 lbs of snow and ice fell on her from a building
adjacent to her TLC Day Care Center Playground. The protective fence that
had been in place for 8 years because of the known slide danger had been
removed by the Day Care Center Owner/Director to expand square footage in the
playground for the addition of more children.
Kent Island: March 1998 - In a final-hour agreement, a Kent Island
babysitter yesterday pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless endangerment in
the deaths of two infant boys who suffocated under a blanket in her home last
year.
Houston, Texas: February 1998 - Abbey Clements, was shaken by her caregiver
who had been running an accredited, state registered, family home daycare for
about 9 years. Abbey never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead
on 02/19/98. Abbey was 4 months old to the day when she was shaken. She had
been to the doctor that morning for her well baby exam and checked out
beautifully. The caregiver has been charged with first degree felony injury
to a child.
Los Angeles, California: March 1998 - James Edeson was assaulted on 03/27/98
a day short of his 5 mo. birthday by his licensed day care provider. He was
transported via 911 to a local ER after a 'grand mal' seizure. A CT was
performed and revealed a skull fracture, subdural hematoma and a fractured
right femur. CA Community Care, which is the State licensing agency,
revoked her license. No criminal charges were ever filed by LAPD
Gainesville, Florida: June 1998 - Bonding Babies Child Care owner was
arrested felony child abuse following the discovery of three infants under
the age of 12 months all with bilateral arm fractures.
Missoula, Montana: October 1989 and 1991 - 8 month old Tanaha Marie LittleBird
dies of "asphyxiation" while in the care of Sally Kester the licensed day
care operator of two centers. Autopsy reports list 2nd and 3rd degree burns
of the chest present. Questioning from the family pediatrition resulted in no
response. Officials demanded the family finance a forensic pathologist to
allow them to pursue the case. 2 years later, 1991, a 9 month old dies in the
same day care center within 4 hours of their arrival.
Las Vegas, Nevada: Spring 1998 - Lori Irish, owner of Simply Kids at 4320
East Bonanza Road, was given 60 days to sell the center before the city's
licensing division closes its doors. Irish did not disclose on her
application for a license that she tested positive for cocaine and "speed"
use when she was a dentist in Texas in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The
Texas State Board of Dental Examiners revoked her dentistry license in April
1993 because she "habitually use(d) cocaine ... habitually use(d) a drug
known as 'speed."'
San Francisco, California: September 1997 - a 6 month old dies from
asphyxiation following the aspiration of a grape. The licensed day care
provider, operating on an expired CPR card, failed to know the proper
procedure for performing the Heimlich maneuver or activating the 911 system
in the event of an emergency. This provider called the child's father who in
turn activated 911. The responding fire station was only 6 blocks from the
providers home.
