NewsOctober 2006 (Medialink) -- More than 50 percent of women over 40 do not know how critical breast cancer screening is or do not have the means to get a mammogram regularly. Yet, it is proven that early detection of breast cancer saves lives. In fact, for each one million women screened for cancer, a thousand lives can be saved. Did you know? - Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women
- Every two minutes a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer
- Women who get regular mammograms reduce their risk of breast cancer death by 63 percent
- Annual mammograms are recommended for women age 40 or older, but only one in 20 women consistently follow that recommendation.
