I don't want to say I hate surprises, (afterall, who would say no to a bouquet of flowers or breakfast in bed?) but I am selective as to the type of surprises with which I deal well. Let's just say surprises that come at me like a 2x4 in the face are not among my favorite things. If the surprise is anywhere outside my ordered view of reality, consider it in the 2x4 category.

Last week, my wonderful husband called from work saying he had a big surprise. In fact, he called again leaving a message to remind me to get ready. I could hear co-workers giggling in the background, so I assumed he received a promotion, was given a company car, won an office pool and was taking me to dinner. The possibilities were numerous, but hardly earth-shaking.

So, there I am, minding my own business, trying to get food on the table, when home he comes. With strict instructions to keep my eyes closed and frequent shushing of the boys, enter the big surprise.....Actually, it was a 4.5 lb.. surprise....in the form of a stray 3 month old kitten.

Now, we already have a 7-8 year old cat (depending upon whether you believe the shelter or the vet's best guess) who invented the term diva. She is a gorgeous Rubinesque tabby exuding attitude, and reveling in her own comfort. (I'm hoping to be her when I grow up) Over the past few weeks, I had, in passing, mentioned to my husband how I wish we had adopted more than one cat when we got her. I really like having her around, and she is such a balancing presence to my energetic boys. (that and she keeps my toes warm on cold nights)

Now my husband, having nothing but the best of intentions, took my flight of fancy literally. He just wanted to put a smile on my face. Cats make me smile, and this cat certainly was in need of a good home. What could go wrong?

Faster then you can say Purina Cat Chow, practicality took over, and I became She Whose Sense of Order Has Been Shaken. "Do we know about this kitten's health? Has he had shots? Has he been neutered? Has anyone tried to find the owners? What if he have worms? Do we have food he can eat? What if our adult cat doesn't want a new friend? What were you thinking!!!! "

My poor husband didn't even know what hit him. He just wanted to give me a surprise.

Fortunately, the vet gave him a clean bill of health. Our sedentary tabby now races the kitten up and down the stairs most playfully (Have you ever heard a 13 lb. cat run around the house? It is most substantial) The kids love him, my husband loves him, and I must admit I've warmed up to him considerably. On look at that face.....how could I not?

My husband had only the best of intentions with his surprise. That certainly was more important than the practical details. All the loose ends got sorted out, and my meltdown was needless. Despite desires to the contrary, it's okay to step out of the comfort zone once and awhile. For me, that was perhaps the biggest surprise.
all the best,

Catie
